Brother Theodore: St. Ann

Brother Theodore: St. AnnBrother Theodore is the brainchild of Ted Gould III, a veteran musician whose career as a sideman includes working with NOLA funk music legend Zigaboo Modeliste, Jon B., Prince Damons and pop icon Jody Watley.

With his debut as a bandleader, Ted has created an organic blend of soul music with funk, rock, and jazz influences. St. Ann features the talents of some of the best New Orleans and Bay Area musicians with guest appearances by Prince alumni, Dr. Fink and Levi Seacer, Jr.

The album opens with the MPLS-style funk jam, “.img” which was curated for Spotify’s “All Funked Up” editorial within days of release. The song garnered 19,426 streams and increased the monthly count from 54 to 13,459 in just two weeks. Also included is “The 504,” a horn-driven homage to New Orleans, an Al Green-style commentary on social media activism, and two instrumentals reminiscent of Stevie Wonder and Vulfpeck. Ted also delivers an unexpected bass guitar and voice rendition of the Elvis Costello classic, “Allison,” and a fresh take on the Brothers Johnson’s “Strawberry Letter 23.” The title track, “The Ghost of St. Ann,” is a haunting acapella tribute to his mother.
